Bay of Mermaids

Yesterday we journeyed to Grand Bereby, a town about an hour from San Pedro to the west. We were going to a resort whose beach overlooks La Baie de Sirènes, or the Bay of Mermaids (definitely not a lagoon). Since the riots several years ago, the resort has still been functioning, but all their amenities have faded away. They no longer offer kayaking or horseback riding, and the pool and restaurant have closed down. However, it was still functioning as a hotel until recently… but when we got there we discovered that the hotel was now closed as well. It will remain closed until the elections here are over. The elections were supposed to take place in October, but seeing as how this is the first election open to the people, the elections seem to be postponed indefinitely until more citizens are registered to vote. After all the political turmoil here in the past few years, it is not surprising that this resort has closed its doors right now. Lucky for us, after much debate, the guardians of the property very kindly let us enter and use the beach. The grounds were beautiful, and we soon learned they were in such excellent state for a new prospective buyer who will be viewing the resort this week. The resort is right on the bay and it was a wonderful place to swim as the water is the perfect depth and there was no undertow at all. We had the place completely to ourselves and in the afternoon the girls and I enjoyed a little walk around the property. We ended up trying to take pictures by this rock, and Ruth thought it would be an excellent idea for Tabitha and I to pose surrounded by water. So, she lured us out there and then ran back to take our picture, just as a giant wave pushed us off our perch into the water. We ended up swimming in our own little Baie de Sirènes– it was a beautiful ending to a lovely day.
