Weekends

We had our first real English class this week where we dove into our book and began our eight week “Journey to America”. Our manageable class of twelve has morphed into an almost overwhelming class of over thirty students! They all seem so eager to be there however and they are very attentive. Joanne does such a wonderful job with the class! I am so thankful she is leading the class. I think it is so important to be able to communicate to them if they do not understand something… and I have great lengths to go in my own French before I am capable of that! I’m sure you can imagine that I feel a little out of my comfort zone in front of a class this size, but I think it will be fun! The students are here after all to learn English and that is all I have to offer them. They are off to a good start though and it is fun listening to them and helping them understand what they are learning. Work at the library is coming along, and I think I’ll have plenty to keep me busy there until the end of May. The many bug eaten books I have come across have given me nightmares about hordes of ants, which is kind of ironic seeing as how “ant season” has finally passed. I’m not sure I want to know what kind of creature is capable of boring those kinds of holes in books. I hope it’s only a greedy cockroach!

In other news this week, Prisca has finally passed her fear-filled stage of tears and hiccupping fright at the thought of swimming lessons. Once she decided that sticking her head under water was fun, she was off like a little mermaid!

(Pictures: Part of the Library, Joanne and I enjoying some cheese bread & Arabian coffee (you haven't had strong coffee until you've tried this! There's a reason those cups are smaller than expresso cups!); Prisca's perpetual smile faded at the thought of another swimming lesson; Then suddenly she's off! Finally on her own!)

Dabney would love the coffee. I can remember when our families would go to Lake Michigan that you were the first in the ice cold water, no fear with you. Your dad would have to grab you from going out too far. You are good for these children. Love you, Aunt Pat

Wow! Teaching in a classroom, and organizing a library! That is so great. I think you might be bored when you come home, you have just done so much in your time over there! I can't wait to hear how your class is going!

I loved these pictures! First you enjoying coffee! (Not quite a Starbucks or Panera Bread, but it will do!)... And how sweet, the pics of Prisca- How lucky she is to have her "Auntie" Cheese there to help her through her fears! (I love the before and after pictures!)... And all I can say to the thought of you teaching ESL to a class of 30 plus is... woah! I am so happy to hear of all your good news!
